CNN Philippines News and Current Affairs

CNN Philippines News and Current Affairs (simply known as CNN Philippines News, formerly known as Solar News and Current Affairs or Solar News and 9News) is the news and public affairs programming division of the media conglomerate Nine Media Corporation (formerly Solar Television Network, Inc.) leasing the airtime of Radio Philippines Network. 9News produces its local news and information contents for CNN Philippines, its online portal and Solar Sports Desk.It formerly produced its contents for the now-defunct Solar News Channel and 9TV, 9News ceased identifying themselves explicitly under such brand with the launching of CNN Philippines last March 16, 2015 and consolidated to the current name since July 2015.

Background

After Solar Entertainment Corporation acquired 34 percent of Radio Philippines Network from the Philippine government as part of RPN/IBC privatization in 2011, Solar TV finally ventured into news at the end of 2011.

First aired in January 16, 2012 as one of the TV networks that aired the Corona Impeachment Trial special coverage. It currently airs their programs in Talk TV since January 2012 and on Solar News Channel on October 30, 2012.

Generic top-level domain

Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) are one of the categories of top-level domains (TLDs) maintained by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) for use in the Domain Name System of the Internet. A top-level domain is the last label of every fully qualified domain name. They are called generic for historic reasons; initially, they were contrasted with country-specific TLDs in RFC 920.

The core group of generic top-level domains consists of the com, info, net, and org domains. In addition, the domains biz, name, and pro are also considered generic; however, these are designated as restricted, because registrations within them require proof of eligibility within the guidelines set for each.

Historically, the group of generic top-level domains included domains, created in the early development of the domain name system, that are now sponsored by designated agencies or organizations and are restricted to specific types of registrants. Thus, domains edu, gov, int, and mil are now considered sponsored top-level domains, much like the themed top-level domains (e.g., jobs). The entire group of domains that do not have a geographic or country designation (see country-code top-level domain) is still often referred to by the term generic TLDs.

Solar (room)

The solar was a room in many English and French medieval manor houses, great houses and castles, generally situated on an upper storey, designed as the family's private living and sleeping quarters. In such houses, the main ground-floor room was known as the Great Hall, in which all members of the household, including tenants, employees and servants, would eat. Those of highest status would be at the end, often on a raised dais, and those of lesser status further down the hall. But a need was felt for more privacy to be enjoyed by the head of the household, and, especially, by the senior women of the household. The solar was a room for their particular benefit, in which they could be alone and away from the hustle, bustle, noise and smells (including cooking smells) of the Great Hall.

The solar was generally smaller than the Great Hall, because it was not expected to accommodate so many people, but it was a room of comfort and status, and usually included a fireplace and often decorative woodwork or tapestries/wall hangings.
